Our mission is to promote the preservation, conservation, and restoration of native plants and native plant communities. We work locally, focusing on Seminole and West Volusia counties, but collaborate with fellow native plant enthusiasts, gardeners, and conservationists across Florida and beyond.

Bioblitz with Cuplet Fern at Geneva Wilderness Area - April 19th

Cuplet Fern Florida Native Plant Society is partnerwint with Seminole Leisure Services Natural Lands Department. Come support native plants with an educational bioblitz!

The botany hike is free and open to the public for individuals above 18 years of age.

Location: Geneva Wilderness Area, Ed & Imogene Yarborough Nature Center, 3485 N. CR 426, Geneva, FL 32732

Timeframe: 9:00am-11:00am

What to Wear: Long-sleeve shirt, long pants, sneakers that will get wet, sunglasses, hat

What to Bring: Bug repellent, sunscreen, ample water, snack

What to Expect: Medium difficulty. 2-4 mile hike. Portions of the trail may be mucky so wear appropriate shoes. Late spring wildflower blooms worthy of your camera.

Note: All participants must sign-off on the Natural Lands Hold & Harmless Agreement before beginning. This is a botany bioblitz supporting the county. The last plant survey was done in 2020. Participants are encouraged to log all kinds of plants (native or not), as well as any animals and fungi on a special iNaturalist project provided by Seminole Natural Lands. A short demonstration on how to use iNaturalist will be provided before beginning.

Dalea feayi (Feay’s prairie clover) Florida is home to many endemic and endangered plants. Natural lands are a popular location for human recreation and some activities are tragic for these plants. Off-roading, an increasingly popular activity often destroys all plants in the frequently travelled paths. Then comes erosion, which makes regrowth near impossible for all except the most aggressive, or worse, invasive plants. As these paths become deeper and the sand loosens (sugar sand) riders must make new paths or get stuck and so, the destruction expands. The most vulnerable plants have little chance in these conditions and it seems for popular off-roading locations, only those difficult to access survive. An island in a sandy, playground desert. These were located where the slope makes it difficult to traverse, the edge of an eroding path, somewhat protected by an oak.

These flowers attract pollinators, but the petals, calyx, and fruit have a sticky substance that can trap some insects! So, tarflower is sticky, like tar. Beautiful nomia bee species Nomia is a genus of sweat bees in the family Halictidae. Many species have opalescent bands on the metasoma aka abdomen. Nomia species are ground nesters. Most species nest solitarily, but some species also nest communally where females share a nest but where there are no queen or worker castes. Many observers have noticed this particular nomia species seem to have a special relationship with our native galactia/milk pea plant species. These are easy to grow from seed and come in a variety of colors- red, pinks, white.
